Duxbury Fire takes delivery of a new Pierce Quint

The Duxbury Fire Department recently took delivery of this 2003 Pierce Dash aerial.  This is the first Pierce fire truck that they have purchased.  The new Pierce replaces a 1976 Mack/Pierre Thibault 100' Aerial Ladder Truck.

Ladder 1 stands 11’ 5” tall, is 42’ long, and is equipped with a heavy-duty 750 pound tip load, 105’ four section, all steel aerial.  It has a 2,000 GPM Waterous two stage pump with a 400-gallon booster tank and Foam Pro 2002 foam system with a 20 gallon Class A foam cell.  It is equipped with a pre-piped pinnable waterway and has a Morse gate at the top of the waterway to allow for extending attack lines into multi-story buildings.

“We were looking for a modern, efficient aerial ladder that would provide the highest level of safety for our members, and would provide our community with another 25 years of reliable service as our Mack/Thibault did.” said Fire Chief William J. Harriman.  “The Pierce name has always been synonymous with high quality fire apparatus, and we were very pleased when they were the low bidder for this truck.  The process of purchasing this truck was done by a Truck Committee that gave hundreds of hours of their time listening to sales presentations and looking at ladder trucks from all manufacturers, talking to the people who operate the ladder trucks daily, and developing a specification for a truck that would best serve our community.  I was very impressed with their commitment to this project, and even more impressed when the new truck arrived at our station.  They did their homework, and our community was the benefactor of their dedication to the project.”

The Dash cab and chassis is equipped with independent suspension, and has a Vogal on-board self-lubrication system.  The Vogal system provides grease to the chassis fittings as the truck moves down the road, assuring that critical areas receive regular lubrication.   The cab has seating for six with a 10” raised roof and is equipped with a climate control system.

Ladder 1 has all state of the art lighting on it.  It has a mix of strobes, incandescent, and LED lighting all used as warning lights.  In addition to using LED’s for warning lights, Pierce uses it in all of the compartments and also for ground level lighting around the truck.  The truck also has a Federal PA300 siren, A Federal Q2B siren, and air horns.

Ladder 1 has a refurbished bell mounted on the front bumper of the truck that was originally mounted on a 1922 American LaFrance / Brockway pumper that served our department for many years.  The cost of rechroming the bell was paid by a donation to the fire department.

The lettering and striping on Ladder 1 is hand painted gold leaf, and our Town seal is hand painted on each of the rear doors.

It carries 1,000’ of 4” hose in a completely functional LDH hose bed.  It also carries attack lines in the cross lay area over the pump of 150’ and 200’ of 1 ¾” hose, 200’ of 2 ½” hose, with dead lay space for 300’ of spare 1 ¾” hose.  Ladder 1 is equipped with a 12,000 watt Westerbeke diesel generator that will provide power to the two 650 watt floodlights on the stick and the floods on the side of the ladder.  The ladder is equipped with a total of 4,300 watts of exterior scene lighting mounted on the truck and additional portable lighting.  Ladder 1 also carries a Thermal Imaging Camera.

The new Pierce cost $624,624.00 and was sold by Jeff Fornier of Minuteman Fire and Rescue in Walpole, Massachusetts.  Ladder 1 joins an apparatus fleet of three engines, two rescues, two brush breakers, two ambulances and two boats.
