Plans for Children In School or Day Care

Schools:

All schools have emergency plans.

In an evacuation:  The plan calls for moving school children early in the emergency if time allows to the “host” school,” located adjacent to Braintree High School. Parents are advised not to phone the school - phone lines would be needed for emergency use - and not to try to pick them up at school - instead, meet them at their host schools.

If you choose to pick your child up at school:  Follow the traffic plan sent to you from the Duxbury School Department so as not to interfere with evacuation busses. Take a minute now to review the traffic access and parking map for your child’s school.

If the call is to shelter:  Schools will be locked down. DO NOT TRY TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD UNTIL THE SHELTER CALL TERMINATES.

Duxbury children who go to a school outside the emergency planning zone communities (Carver, Kingston, Marshfield, and Plymouth) will either be held at their school until their parents pick them up or an alternative plan followed that is pre-arranged with the parent/guardian.

If an emergency existed before the start of the school day, school would be canceled, as it is when there is danger of a winter storm.

Day Care Centers:

All day care centers within the emergency planning zone have emergency plans. Early in an emergency, day care centers will be closed. Parents will be notified of this by telephone, if possible, and asked to pick up their children. Any children not picked up will be taken to a host school, a separate part of Braintree High School. Check to see if your child’s day care center has stockpiled KI. If so be sure that your permission/consent form has been sent by the school to Duxbury Emergency Management Agency for our town shelter records.

Monitoring School Children at the Reception Center, Braintree High School — State Policy Differs From The Town Of Duxbury’s Policy.

The State Plan calls for monitoring school children for contamination only when the state determines it is necessary. If they determine your child is likely-to-be contaminated, the children would be taken directly to the reception center for monitoring and, if necessary, decontamination and then to the host school where you should pick them up.

Duxbury’s Policy instead calls for monitoring all children first at the Reception Center BEFORE taking them to the Host Facility. The reason is that there is no guarantee that the state has an accurate fix on the amount and spread of contamination in a disaster and we believe that it is better to be safe than sorry. We hope Duxbury’s policy will be followed. We recommend that when you pick your child up at the Host Facility ask for a monitoring record and if one is not available insist that your child and family be monitored at the reception center before leaving the facility. This step will assure peace of mind and, if contaminated and decontaminated right there, a better health prognosis.
