Plans for Special Groups

Health Care Facilities:

Hospital patients and residents of nursing homes who are physically able to be moved will be taken to other health care facilities outside the area if evacuation is necessary. Ask the facility for details. If time allows, families of patients well enough to be discharged on a short-term basis will be contacted by health care administrators before an evacuation occurs.

If patients in health care facilities are evacuated to host facilities, information on their locations will be available through Duxbury Emergency Management  Agency at (781) 934-7159 or 7141.

People with Special Needs:

Let the Duxbury Emergency Management Director know in advance if you need any special assistance during an emergency. Special help can be made available to you.

If you or someone in your household would need special help being notified of an emergency, sheltering-in-place, evacuating, or staying in a mass care shelter, please let the Emergency Management Office know immediately by filling out and mailing the Special Needs Card at the back of the Emergency Calendar. Or, download the Special Needs Emergency Form.

If you know someone who is blind or might have difficulty reading the radiological Emergency calendar, please read it to them. Emergency information is also available on a CD for the blind at the Duxbury Free Library.

If you are hearing-impaired and would need to be notified on a TTY of a public emergency, please notify you’re the Duxbury Emergency Management Office.

Preparing Children:

If you have children who might be home alone, make sure they understand the information provided here and in the emergency calendar and know what to do in an emergency. It is especially important that they know how to tune to their Emergency Alert System station; where to shelter inside your home; how to get a ride if the call is to evacuate.

People at the Beaches:

In an emergency, beaches would be closed. People at the beaches will be alerted by Beach Staff to leave the area and listen to the Emergency Alert System stations.

Boaters on Duxbury and Cape Cod Bay:

Boaters on Cape Cod Bay should follow instructions given by the Duxbury Harbormaster or the U.S. Coast Guard. You are advised to keep Potassium Iodide and 3-M masks in your boat medical kit.
