Call Number:  AR ESA S6B1 TAX TITLE:  Duxbury Taxpayers’ Association 1977-1997 AUTHOR:  Duxbury Taxpayers’ Association QUANTITY: 1 box containing 11 folders

HISTORICAL NOTE:  The Duxbury Taxpayers’ Association was formed in Oct. 1977 to address concerns over ever increasing property taxes. The association had a paid membership with a board of directors. The membership was open to any registered voter in, or any person assessed for a property tax by the Town of Duxbury. Because the by-laws did not provide for disbandment, the board voted to enter a “Period of Reduced Activity” in 1997. The mission of the Duxbury Taxpayers’ Association was 2-part: “To promote nonpartisan interest in and study of the fiscal activities of Town Government that may affect the taxpayers of Duxbury” and “To strive to assist in procuring the greatest possible efficiency at the lowest practical cost.” The DTA was influential in the formation of an Enterprise Plan for the Water and Cemetery Departments; the formation of a Charter Commission; the in-depth analysis of the Gurnet Road sewer project; and the Town Manager Study. It published information on the major warrant issues and worked to encourage voter participation in Town Meeting throughout its existence.
