Mission Statement
The Crafted Coral Reef, adapted from the Crochet Coral Reef Project, aims to create educational and creative opportunities for the local Duxbury community to confront climate change, specifically the health of our oceans. At the intersection of art, science, and advocacy, a library is particularly suited to engage the community at large in conversation about the effects of climate change on ocean ecosystems, marine life, and coastal communities.
This long-term project will use crowd-sourced art to build a large crafted coral reef exhibit. Pieces may be crafted in any medium, but must be no deeper than 10”, no wider than 24”, and no taller than 36”. Pieces constructed from degradable materials (food and/or unpreserved natural materials) will not be accepted. The library will solicit donations of craft supplies - primarily yarn and other fiber art tools - and will make those materials available to the public to emphasize sustainability and encourage upcycling.
In collaboration with our community partners, we will facilitate and provide programs centered on community art, collaborative art, and environmental art, as well as climate change, marine life, ocean health, coastal resiliency, and sustainability.
