Entrance Process:

Applications shall only be accepted during times deemed necessary by the Chief of Department.  Look for postings on our website and in the local papers.

The Duxbury Fire Department will from time to time accept applications for a written examination for the position of Firefighter.  Our intention is to hire highly skilled candidates who will provide high quality services to the citizens of Duxbury into the 21st century.  We encourage those with diverse specialized training, experience, and certification levels, including Firefighter I/II and Advanced Life Support to apply for this extremely challenging position.

Application Process:

Application packets are filled out online through Town of Duxbury Human Resources Department.

Minimum Eligibility for Examination:

Applicants shall not be less than 18 years old at time of application.  Must hold at least a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).  Possession of valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.  A copy of the license must be submitted with your application.

Application Review:

Prior to written examination:

  1. Submission of proper application and/or resume.
  2. Compliance with minimum eligibility requirements.

At the completion of the Application Review Process, candidates who qualify for the examination will be furnished with a Letter of Confirmation from the Fire Chief.  This letter, along with a valid Massachusetts drivers license, will allow entry to exam location. Instructional sheets will provide the date, time, location, and other pertinent exam information.

Written Examination:

Those candidates that complete the application review process will be eligible to sit for the open written examination that will be developed, administered, and corrected by an independent third party.

Minimum passing grade on the written examination is 70%  Examination grade will determine applicant’s position on the initial appointment list.  Grades will not be publicly posted.

Appeals Process:

A candidate’s final examination grade is subject to appeal only through the review process held by the third party examination team.  The decision rendered by that examination team shall be final.  Additional relevant information appears in the “Instructional Sheets” supplied qualifying candidates.

Appointment List:

Upon the close of the appeal process, an appointment list will be developed based on the results of the written examination.  The appointment lists will remain in effect for two years unless sufficient qualified candidates remain on the list.

Minimum Requirements for Appointment:

Graduation from high school or equivalent is the minimum requirement but a college degree or college experience is highly desirable.

Possession of valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Certificate issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Must be a non-smoker on and off duty at time of appointment in accordance with the provisions of Massachusetts’s General law, Chapter 41, section 101A.

Examples of desired training and/or experience includes:

  • Certification as a Technical Rescue Technician;
  • Certification in confined space entry and rescue;
  • Completion of Massachusetts Fire Academy Recruit Training;
  • Certification to Firefighter Level 1 and/or Firefighter Level 2;
  • Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate or Paramedic;
  • Other Firefighter Training/Certification;
  • Certification as a diver.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge.  Working knowledge of the streets and physical layout of the town.  Knowledge of general building construction.  Knowledge of electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems.  Training in the Jaws of Life and other related power equipment.  Working knowledge of first aid and resuscitation techniques.  Knowledge of management of medical emergencies, treatment protocols, pharmacology, pathophysiology of injuries and ailments, cardiac arrhythmias and their treatment, advanced life support.  Knowledge of rescue and extrication techniques.

Ability.  Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the general public.  Courage and emotional stability.  Ability to apply standard firefighting and emergency aid techniques to specific situations.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to meet required physical standards of age, weight, height and strength.  The firefighter’s position involves physically risky functions under emergency conditions.  A firefighter’s functions may include: connecting, pulling and operating hose lines; operating a fire pump; positioning and climbing ladders; emergency rescue and lifesaving; ventilating smoke filled areas; using and maintaining tools and equipment; and physical training and fire station activities.  

Performance of work also involves standing and walking for long periods of time.  Physical agility is required to access all areas at the scene of the fire.  Emergencies may require pushing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and reaching with hands and arms.  Firefighters may be required to lift/carry equipment or persons weighing more than 100 pounds.  Wears protective clothing during emergency or training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke.


Consideration for appointment will be based upon:

  1. Examination results;
  2. Evaluation of application/resume;
  3. Experience/performance;
  4. Interview with Review Board.

When a position becomes available, a proportionate number of candidates on the appropriate existing list will be interviewed by a review panel.  The Review Panel will consist of members of the Fire Department and members of the community.

For one position, three candidates will be interviewed.  For two positions, six candidates will be interviewed.  For three positions, eight candidates will be interviewed.

The Review Panel will make recommendations to the Fire Chief.  The Fire Chief will complete background checks through the Criminal History Systems Board.  The Fire Chief will then make his final recommendation to the Town Manager who is the hiring authority.

The successful candidate or candidates will then be offered a Conditional Offer of Employment. See sample enclosed.

Statutory Requirements:

If considered for an appointment to a position, appointees must:

Pass a pre-employment medical examination.  The medical examination for entry level Firefighters as defined by The Massachusetts Human Resources Division.

Pass a Physical Abilities Test (PAT).  This test is is administered Human Resources Division (HRD).  This test will test your aerobic capacity and your physical capability to perform firefighting related tasks such as dragging a person, raising a ladder, gaining forcible entry using a sledgehammer, advancing a fire hose, tearing open a ceiling or wall using a plaster hook, and crawling through a darkened enclosed area to search for victims.  Appointees who receive a conditional offer of employment will be told how to apply for the physical agility test at that time.  A fee will be charged to the applicant for administration of the PAT.

Complete and pass the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Recruit Firefighting Training Program.  This is not required of Call Firefighters.

All candidates for Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician positions are subject to the provisions of Chapter 697, Section 117 of the Acts of 1987, which states that "no person who smokes tobacco products shall be eligible for appointment as a Firefighter and no person appointed shall continue in such office or position if such person thereafter smokes any tobacco products".

In accordance with Article 4.5 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Town of Duxbury and the Duxbury Permanent Firefighters Assn., Local 2167, the employee will serve a one year probationary period to determine my fitness for service with the Duxbury Fire Department.  During the one-year probationary period, the employee may be terminated without benefit of recourse to the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

All firefighter candidates must meet Medical and Physical Fitness Standards while employed in order to maintain your employment.  Every two years, you will be required to undergo a medical and physical fitness assessment.  This assessment will consist of a job related physical fitness test designed to simulate the physical demands of the duties that may be performed by firefighters, and an assessment of your overall medical condition as it relates to your ability to perform the essential functions of your job.  These standards are mandated by the provisions of Section 22D of Chapter 32 of the Massachusetts General Laws, as amended by chapter 697 of the Acts of 1987.
