KI Program Cessation

Please be advised that the Duxbury Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), effective immediately, will cease the potassium iodide (Kl) program and no longer replenish Kl. This decision is based upon data received from the Commonwealth of Mass, Department of Public Health, Radiation Control Program.

On January 14, 2020, a memo was received regarding the guidance behind the cessation. Briefly, Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (PNPS) ceased operating on May 31, 2019. DPH has determined there is no longer a risk of exposure to radioactive iodine from the plant. Therefore, DEMA will no longer support the program.

Please destroy any permission cards for students. Disposal of Kl can be safely disposed of in the municipal solid waste. Kl is a salt and does not require prior treatment or disposal through traditional medication take-back programs.
