DUXBURY BEACH OPERATIONS  UPDATE

BEACH UPDATE - 7/8/21

Hope all our beach patrons/sticker holders had a great 4th of July!! Below please find some information I hope you find useful.

WHO IS WHO ON DUXBURY BEACH:

BEACH RANGERS

This year the Town migrated Beach Operations to the Recreation Department. The Department hired around 30 part time/seasonal Beach Rangers and Lead Rangers, over the winter months. These folks are employees of the Town of Duxbury and work within the   Recreation Department - Beach Operations Division. They were hired, trained, and are supervised by the Recreation Department management staff; Ryan Brown, Beach Operations Administer, Steve Studley, Assistant Recreation Director and Gordon Cushing Recreation Director.

In addition to Mr. Brown mentioned above, we hired and trained or promoted from last year’s staff some Lead Beach Rangers. These employees have some supervisory duties when other full-time employees are not on site.

All of the above staff are employees of the Town of Duxbury and are paid by the Town.

BEACH LIFEGUARDS

The Town of Duxbury provides Beach Lifeguards to help ensure the safety of our swimming public. The Beach Lifeguards have been supervised for decades by the Recreation Department. These lifeguards are on duty basically from Memorial Day to Labor Day, weather permitting and are on duty 7 days a week 9-5 pm. The beach lifeguards are stationed directly east of the Powder Point bridge and supervise a swimming area 200 yards in length. These Town of Duxbury employees are paid by the Town.

BIRD MONITORS

On the property you will find Bird Monitors and related supervisory staff. These staff are employees of the owners of Duxbury Beach. Duxbury Beach Reservation Inc. (the owners) hire, train, pay and supervise the Bird Monitors.  These staff are responsible for the endangered species that inhabit the beach an all that encompasses that job.

BLAKEMAN’S

This area encompasses the pay to park public lots, a restaurant/snack bar and other operations offered through the owners of the beach – Duxbury Beach Reservation Inc. This operation includes parking lot employees, lifeguards, restaurant workers and managers for this extremely busy and popular destination.

OTHERS

Though not permanently stationed at the site you will also find other “agencies “at the beach regularly.  Duxbury Police and Fire, Duxbury Public Works, Duxbury Board of Health (for water testing) and State of MA Environmental Police are often at the beach performing a wide variety of tasks.

I would like to point out in particular that although the Town and DBR manage different divisions of employees with different responsibilities we endeavor to cooperate as much as possible as a team to deliver the best services we can for the beach patrons.

NORTHERN LOT

This lot is open to current non-resident sticker holders. It I open 8 am to 8PM. Please ask staff if you are uncertain of the location of this lot. It is free for any current non-resident sticker holder.

ENDANGERED SPECIES UPDATE

At present we are in the midst of more than a few nests hatching chicks. With this, there will be some road closures on the beach road as chicks migrate back and forth to feed. Please be respectful of the Bird Monitors and adhere to all their instructions.   The location and number of nests will keep crossovers closed for the foreseeable future.

Lastly, I wanted to thank everyone for their cooperation over the 4th of July weekend. Though the weather certainly stunk, those that came to the beach were overall well behaved and we are grateful for that.
