Executive Summary for the Town of Duxbury - Climate Resiliency Infrastructure Planning

Ongoing – Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Coastal Resiliency Grants

  • Plan, design, & permit beach nourishment and dune enhancement projects at vulnerable coastal beaches in Duxbury and Marshfield, which will supplement future sea wall reconstruction to improve the resiliency of the shoreline to sea level rise & the impacts of climate change

2021 – MVP Grant: Duxbury Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment & Adaptation Plan

  • Identified areas of the Town vulnerable to the combined effects of sea level rise & storm surge from extreme storm events, assessed the vulnerability of municipally-owned public infrastructure & natural resources, & identified strategies to help mitigate the near & long-term effects of sea level rise and storm surge
  • Also studied impacts & identified strategies for private businesses in Snug Harbor (DBMS, Island Creek Oysters, Bayside Marine, Yacht Club, & Sweetsers)

2019 - MAPC Accelerating Climate Resiliency Mini-Grant: Snug Harbor Resiliency Study

  • Engaged with the community to identify a set of recommendations that can be undertaken through public and private actions & investments to bring about incremental resilience improvements to Snug Harbor.

2018 – MVP Grant: Duxbury’s Climate Vulnerability Assessment & Action Plan

  • Built upon previous completed plans for hazard mitigation, coastal flooding, emergency management & open space protection
  • Studied climate risk projections, evaluated Duxbury’s vulnerability & success, and developed a set of climate action priorities.

2018 – Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (Effective through January 8, 2024)

  • Plan is required for Towns to be eligible for FEMA funding for hazard mitigation grants & needs to be updated every 5 years
  • Identified hazard mitigation goals for the Town and mitigation measures that can be taken to reduce dangers to life & property from natural hazard events

2017 – Coastal Processes Study & Resiliency Recommendations for Duxbury Beach & Bay

  • Studied the coastal processes that shape Duxbury Beach and recommended nature-based adaptations to improve the resiliency of the beach

2015 – MA Coastal Infrastructure Inventory & Assessment Report Update South Shore: Marshfield, Duxbury, Kingston & Plymouth

  • Assessed structures of public ownership that provide coastal protection, rated the conditions of these structures, and estimated the cost to repair/replace these structures, incorporating impacts from sea level rise into the estimated costs

2013 – Kleinfelder Sea Level Rise Study for Marshfield, Scituate & Duxbury

  • Studied the extent & magnitude of sea level rise and storm surge vulnerability within the Towns focusing on public infrastructure, identified adaptation strategies to help mitigate long-term effects of sea level rise & storm surge

2012 – Duxbury Seawalls Condition Survey and Study

  • Studied the existing shoreline conditions along Duxbury Beach to develop recommendations for repairs and improvements to the existing seawalls, and to develop a beach maintenance plan for Duxbury Beach overall

2011 – South Shore Coastal Hazards Adaptation Study for Duxbury, Marshfield & Scituate

  • Assessed current & potential future coastal vulnerabilities to the impacts from sea level rise and changes in storm intensity/frequency, identified a range of possible adaptation options & provided information about resources that could support local actions and strategies.
